Sub-Human Begins
Now that we had decided on this three-peice thing it was time to practise it. I was very surprised in the turn out, we had a set of 8 originals - Raising Hell
- You Love It, I Hate It
- Always Cautious
- Hate Machine
- Cry For Nothing
- Marijdouwanna?
- Insane Anger
- Axe Murder Boy
and 1 cover (Marilyn Manson-Dope Hat). As soon as we had those songs tight I went straight to Dave Hannay at the State Of It/Odins Inn and told him about Sub-Human. He booked us in for a gig coming up with Voodoo Butta and Department Of Corruption which was a band Keiran was singing for at the time. It was a fluke that our first gig was on Friday the 13th of February 2004, and when we got up there we let loose and had a fucking awesome crowd moshing to us. Afterwards everyone was buzzing and we got asked to do a gig the following weekend with Angel Hammer and Sneaky Weasel Gang. The flyers had already been made so our name wasn't there but we didn't give a fuck we wan't as much showtime as possible.
After playing shows around Napier at The State Of It, O'Flars and The Bogan Shed it was time to enter The World Battle Of The Bands. This took place in August 2004 and happened to be the night I got kicked out of home and dumped by my girlfreind. It didn't affect my performance though cause we got through alongside Omega Dawn and were on our way to the Semi-finals in New Plymouth. I couldn't beleive it when our name got called out, it was a bit of a jump up and down and then fuck off to Odins for a beer.
New Plymouth came the following weekend so we had to act quick, and we did. We made it there sweet as and played pretty fucking well. Well we must of cause only one band went through and it was us yet again. That was the topping on the cake, very unbeleivable for me, but yes a celebration was in order. When we got back to Napier we had gigs jacked up at partys and the Shed. We played at the Shed got fucked up on piss and drugs and left the place at daylight. I cruized with Aaron on a mission and fell asleep in this dude Mikes Caravan for a couple of hours. I got woken up too "dude it's time to go to that party were playing at". I was thinking what? where the fuck am I? and out the door into this sexy chic Moniques car. We got to the party and I was on it again drinking and smoking, single as and having Monique flirt with me all night. Matryside played first and I had a sing with them for Murderdolls-Dead In Hollywood. that was sick, Spitfire were the next band and noise control came when they were finishing so we didn't even get to play. After the party was getting a bit gay we decide to cruise but couldn't find Aaron, we searched for maybe 10 minutes before we thought he must have left already. Wrong the next morning not only did Aaron come to Moniques to find I had slept with the chic he liked, he had also been bottled and had a tendon severed in his thumb.
This was very tragic and made front page of the paper, it also caused us having to look for a new drummer fo the National final. It was gutting for us but more gutting for him. He resorted to sending us death threats and shit when we were only doing it because he would have fucked his hand for life if he continued to play before it had healed. Let alone the fact it was still in a cast. We got Adam from Voodoo Butta/Saidaya to fill in and he picked up the our tracks we chose quick as fuck. The final in Auckland went off, we had a van full of a little Sub-Krew and I had my new groupie chic Mon with me. Chugganaut took that one out. We had a wild mission there and back, with the throwing of bottles at cars tryna take us out and trucks crashed along the side of the roads. It was loose.
A New Start For Sub-Human
The search for a new drummer was to begin now because Chad did not want to play with Aaron again after the death threats and what not. So we ended up jamming with AJ, that was all good and wen't down pretty well. Before we new it we were back in the game and had new songs too play to our fans. We jammed alot at the State and Odins before it all crashed and Dave lost the venue. We were lucky that Dave recorded us a 7 track demo before it ended for all the shows we had done. We done that recording in three days during three short sessions. The tracks we done are:
- Lock Me Up (fuck that)
- Always Cautious
- Open Your Eyes
- Cunt-Stubble
- Zombied Zombie
- Ripped Apart
- Raising Hell
We were very stoked and had a massive experience doing it all. After the Cd was done we had no more Odins and no more State Of It so it was just O'flars and The Shed left to jam at. That was all good though, we love playing those venues and still do at O'flars. Unfortunatly The Bogan Shed came to an end as well.
We got Lock Me Up played on The Axe Attack one night and were awarded demo of the week for it. That was a big buzz fo us all and put us in motivation mode. We started doing Insane Anger live with Keiran as a guest singer, but we loved it so much we took him on board. I was always enjoying Insane Anger because I got to go crazy moshing in the parts he sung. So he learnt all the songs and from then on Sub-Human has been a four-peice. Next month we have another World Battle to enter, but who knows really, can a band make it through twice in a row? whether we can or not it's the fun that I love and so far the bands entering our region we havn't played alongside yet, So looking forwards to that hard out
Unfortuanatly th four-peice thing did not work out so we are a three-peice again. Keiran had other commitments being a full time Video and Electronic Media student. He's still a good mate of ours.
A homemade DVD has been edited and finished, only a couple of copies have been made so far but we will get onto doing a few more to be purchased via e-mail or phone. If you want a copy of the DVD we will make you one for . It runs for aproximately 20 mins and is full of random sub-experience's. Alot of pot
Well the world battle heat happened and yes it is possoble for a band to go through twice. We made it through for the second time in a row along side Gisbourne reggae punk band Skankamelia. It was a good night, the gathering of 7 bands: Ayke, Opus, Omega Dawn, Dexterity, Dead Heroes Collective and the two who made it through. So now we got a trip to New Plymouth happening, cannot wait for it but some planning has to be done.
It was a long and relativly boring trip to New Plymouth, but fuck it was worth it. We competed against some massive bands with heaps of talent. The night started with a punk band called 'Semi Blind Fly' they blew me away with there 'Fuck You!' sort of attitude. The .Agent. a hard rock band jumped on and rocked the fuck out, I like the style they played it was kinda like Tool crossed with a bit of metal. (reminded me of Cripple Mr. Onion personally). Then Skankamelia took the stage with there Reggae punk which was pumping with energy. After Skankamelia jumped off the stage it was our turn... Sub-Human jumped up and in my mind we ripped shit up. We had a few supporters from the bay who all moshed along but to see people from New Plymouth running up to the mosh pit and getting right into was a shock, a very good one. Such a good shock that I was feeding off it and going nuts. after we played our set of 5 songs (Feel the Fear, Lock Me Up (fuck that), Cunt-Stubble, Open Your Eyes and Zombied Zombie) it was time to consume heaps off piss to try catch up to the rest of the bar. Then Viscera hit the stage with some old skool sounding metal and a wiked instrumental track where the musicians let loose. The last band to make some music was Niho Taniwha with the rap/rock styles going down, that was also awsome and the competition was very tough. All these different styles of music had come to compete and the tension was on... Winner of the night was .Agent. who are off to the final in Auckland. We had a chat to the judges and found out we had come 2nd by 4 points, so close but no cigar. We may not have made it through but we still felt really good afterwards and had a fucking choice night. All the bands rocked and we are now back in Napier about to work on some new material.
